Volunteers Sought For Tree Inventory Training

Saturday, June 11, 2005 – 9 AM – 1 PM
At Mary Taylor Church

Come spend part of the day learning about trees, meeting new and old friends and helping your community. Milford Trees, Inc. and the Tree Commission will be holding a tree inventory refresher course on Saturday, June 11th, 9 AM-1 PM at the Mary Taylor Church classroom building located at 176 Broad Street in downtown Milford.
Chris Donnelly (CT DEP Division of Forestry), Rob Rocks (CT DEP Forester) and Irwin Langewisch (Milford Tree Warden) will teach local residents how to identify tree species. Other important data collecting skills will be taught such as the diameter, location, condition and maintenance needs of our public trees. This summer and fall, we will be taking inventory of our park and schoolyard trees, one of a series of important steps towards comprehensive management of Milford’s urban forest. Also, we will provide training in the use of Global Positioning Systems with a Trimble GPS handheld that was purchased through a grant from CT DEP’s American the Beautiful program. Let us know if you are interested in that segment of the training.
Analysis of the data using Geographic Information System (GIS) will help protect and maintain the health of our trees. The information will be used to make informed decisions about the diversity of our community forests that provide us with cleaner air, habitat for wildlife, shelter from extreme weather, sound buffers and a better quality of life.
Volunteers, adults and children (12 and up), will be needed from all neighborhoods in Milford to make the inventory a successful work in progress. No previous experience required. Just bring your enthusiasm and have a willingness to learn about trees. We ask that the attendees of the training session give at least 10 hours of their time to data collecting. Previous volunteers are encouraged to join us and brush up on their skills.
Part of the session will be held outside so bring appropriate clothing. Lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required.
